What does caffeine really do to your body? And how does caffeine keep us awake? Most people don’t think much about these questions – despite the fact that caffeine is the most widely used stimulant on the planet. Common caffeinated products include coffee, tea, cocoa, energy drinks, soda, medications, and weight-loss pills.
Regular consumption of caffeinated drinks and foods not only leads to caffeine addiction, but people experience mild to severe caffeine withdrawal symptoms when trying to quit their habit. Too much caffeine in the body can cause that jittery feeling, as well as anxiety, insomnia and high blood pressure. In addition, it is possible to overdose on caffeine.
While caffeine consumption poses no concerning health risks for most people – if consumed in safe amounts – pregnant women and people with heart problems should avoid or drastically limit their caffeine intake.
