Twisted Chain Stitch Selvedge How-To | Slip Stitch Edging Technique | Knitting Lessons for Beginners
This slip stitch edging technique is easy enough for beginners to learn, and the purpose of it is to create a ‘twisted chain’ on the selvedges of your knitting.
These chain edges are smoother and, I think, prettier than the usual edges you get on garter stitch and other stitch patterns.
I am demonstrating this particular technique using garter stitch as the main pattern, but you can add this edging onto each side of many patterns including stockinette stitch and seed stitch.
The Pattern:
All you have to do is add two different stitches to each row;
Row 1 (and every subsequent row): Add a stitch at the beginning of the row and slip it knitwise, and add a stitch at the end of the row and purl it.
Because you are adding 2 stitches every row, one at either end, you will most likely need to cast on 2 extra stitches compared to how many stitches the pattern tells you to cast on.
For example, if a pattern tells you to cast on 40 stitches…cast on 42 instead.
(This only applies to flat knitting, not circular knitting.)
