Transplanting Garden Planted Aloe
Work a sharp shovel under the roots of the aloe plant. If the ground is hard and dry, soak the area first to soften the soil for digging.
Lift the aloe out of the soil by pushing down on the shovel handle. When transplanting large aloes, dig out the roots from several sides before lifting the plant out of the soil.
Place the root ball on a tarp or in a wheelbarrow. You can move small aloes by hand.
Dig a new hole in a sunny, well-drained area of your garden that’s the same depth as the root ball. If necessary, amend the soil with coarse material, such as pumice and sharp sand, to improve drainage.
Place the aloe upright in the hole and backfill the soil around the roots. Pat down the soil with the your hands or gently compress it with with your feet.
Wait two to three days and then water the soil around the new aloe transplant.
Transplanting Potted Aloe
Select a clean pot with a drainage hole in the bottom. Cover the hole with a loose-fitting flat stone or a small piece of screen and place it over the hole. The trick is to let water out and keep soil in.
Spread a 1- to 2-inch layer of potting soil over the bottom of the pot. Use potting soil formulated for cacti and succulents.
Slide the aloe plant out of the container it’s in. Handle the plant by the root ball as much as possible to avoid damaging the plant. When transplanting large aloes, it’s particularly important to lift the plant by the root ball.
Place the aloe on top of the soil in the new pot. Add soil under the root ball as necessary until the base of the aloe is aligned with the lip of the pot.
Add more soil around the root ball as needed to fill in the pot. Pat it down with the flat of your hand.
Wash the dirt off the outside of the pot. Water the aloe transplant two to three days after transplanting.
Tip
Water your aloe plant infrequently but deeply – if it’s potted, until water flows from the bottom drainage hole – when the top inch or two of soil is dry to the touch. Aloes hate to sit in water, and over saturating the plant may encourage rot.
The best time to water your aloe is in the morning to give its foliage time to dry off before night falls.
