How to Knit: The Fisherman’s Rib Stitch | Knitting Pattern & Tutorial for Chunky Ribbing

Also called the English rib, the Fisherman’s rib is a chunky & reversible rib texture. This video tutorial will walk you through the technique step-by-step.

First you will need to cast on an even number of stitches, then do a setup row consisting of just purl stitches.
Then you repeat:
Pattern: *p1, k1b
Repeat from * until last 2 stitches, then p2
(Where k1b = a ‘knit 1 below’ stitch)

To bind off, you can do the usual bind off technique, but every other stitch will be a k1b rather than a k:
k1, k1b, pso *k1, pso, k1b, pso
Repeat from * to end of row.
(Where pso = pass the (k/k1b) stitch over)

Try and bind off loosely, because the rib stitch is stretchy so you don’t want the edges tight and restrictive.
