El león y el ratón es una fábula atribuida a Esopo y reescrita posteriormente entre otros por Jean de la Fontaine
En ella un ratón incauto sale de su madriguera y apareció el león. La fiera le atrapa con sus garras y se dispone a comerle pero finalmente se apiada por los gritos de clemencia del insignificante animal. Tiempo después, el león es atrapado en una red por cazadores, pero es donde el ratón aparece y al verle desesperado, le ayuda cortando la red con sus dientes y agradeciéndole le ofrece su amistad.
La moraleja de la fábula es que “ningún acto de bondad queda sin recompensa” y que “no conviene desdeñar la amistad de los humildes”. Esta misma enseñanza se repite en otras fábulas del propio Esopo como la de El esclavo y el león.
Probablemente la fábula tiene orígenes indios, dado que es casi idéntica a la contada Tot a Hathor en un mito. Ademas esta historia es destinaba por los niños entre los edades de 3 y 6 años.
