********** MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES **********
* ruler
* rotary cutter or scissors
* fabric (22″ long x 3.5″ wide) cotton fabric (I used 100% cotton and 100% linen fabric)
* (1) 9″ piece of elastic- you can use 1/4″ wide or 3/8″ (I used 1/4″ in the video)
* safety pin, bodkin, tube tuner (to feed your elastic in) any of these will work.
* sewing machine
* coordinating thread
********** HOW TO SEW DIY SCRUNCHIES **********
1. Begin by cutting a 22″ long x 3.5″ wide piece of fabric of your choice.
2. Choose one of the 3.5″ sides and fold fabric edge over 1/2″ so the wrong sides of the fabric are together.
3. Press (finger press or iron) long sides of fabric edges so that the right sides of the fabric are together.
4. Pin (optional) or sew a 1/4″ seam along the long edge. Backstitch at the beginning and the end of your line of stitching.
5. Turn your tube of fabric RSO (right side out). The pretty side of your fabric facing out and the seam hidden on the inside.
6. Thread your 9″ piece of elastic through your fabric tube.
7. Tie the loose ends of your elastic together with a double knot. You may also sew them together if you prefer but this can be tricky with smaller width elastic. Either way will work.
8. Once your elastic is secured together, feed the end of your fabric scrunchie with the RAW edges into the side of the scrunchie that has the finished edge. Feed-in about 1/2″. This will give your scrunchie a nice finished look.
9. Once your scrunchie is laying nice and flat, stitch a 1/4″ seam along the finished edge. Backstitch at the beginning, the middle (optional), and the end of your row of stitching.
10. Trim excess threads and your scrunchie is complete.
11. Wear with pride your new creation! Enjoy!
