This is the building our dream home series part 1. We created this series as a timeline for building our new log home here in the pacific northwest. We started our home building journey back in mid-2017, shortly after we moved from the city of Seattle. Initially, we were working towards building a craftsman style timber home and moved to the idea of building a log home because we thought it would really work well with the area where we live. Our 3.5-acre piece of land is right on the river, so a log home seems to capture the beauty and essence of living in the woods and on a river very well. People always seem so intrigued by the idea of a log home, so we thought we would share our adventure with building one here. I have lived in the PNW my entire life and actually grew up in a log home. While I don’t remember much of the building process from my childhood, I do have so many fond memories of growing up in one. It seems like the curiosity of a log home has not ceased. I remember people always stopping by our house growing up just asking if they could peek inside. I’m guessing once ours is done, the same thing might happen as it’s happened already and we don’t even have the logs here yet. People know that we are building a log home so I guess that’s curiosity enough. We don’t really mind all the questions or comments about it. We are glad people are curious. Mark has happily taken on the role of doing a lot of the work himself in an effort to save as much money as possible so those resources can be used elsewhere during our build. He cut down the trees, did all the stump removal, dug the foundation and so many other little things I can’t even remember them all to list.
We had our home plans drawn out and once permitting was approved, we hit the ground running.
The first thing we did was remove the shed that was off to the side of the garage. We had thought about keeping it and relocating it somewhere else on the property for possible use as a chicken house. However, it wasn’t constructed in a way that made it easy to move so it was torn down instead. Mark was careful about how he tore it down and saved as much of the salvageable lumber and timbers as possible for use later on inside the house (hopefully). We’d really like to incorporate some elements of the original buildings and house into our new home somewhere. So for now, the lumber is resting in the garage for use later on.
This video mainly contains pictures and some video clips of the land clearing. As our build progresses, we have more actual video footage that I’ve taken that will be posted soon.
We are new to homesteading and hope that we can share our journey with all of you. Don’t forget to subscribe and share!
Stay tuned for another building update soon.
