Hi. I’m Lisa Dawn Angerame. I’m one of the founding partners of Nava NYC, a collective of nine yoga and meditation teachers in New York City. Our website is www.navanyc.com.Today I will be talking to you about meditation.
Meditating with a mala is a great way to focus your mind. This is an example of a mala. You can buy this at a yoga school or even online. To meditate with a mala, you hold it with your thumb and your middle finger. You don’t touch it with your pointer finger, this is the finger of your ego so you don’t want to be touching the beads with that finger. So it takes a little practice to get used to it, but you use it to focus your mind.
So on each breath you turn the mala. So you inhale, and then you exhale hold the bead. Inhale, exhale go to the next bead. Inhale, exhale go to the next bead. So this focuses your mind on an activity instead of all the talk and the chatter in your mind.
So you do this the whole way through and you go all the way to the end. When you get to the end, you get to that guru bead, that big bead, and you turn it around and go back the way you came. It’s good to do one round forward and one round back. Depending on the length of the mala, it could take you anywhere from five to ten minutes.
Meditating with a mala is a great way to focus your mind. The energy of your meditation practice will be absorbed by the mala and have a sense of calm and power that is just your own.
