For this drawing you just need some soft pencils (4B or 6B), a piece of paper, an eraser and a little time.
This is a narrated drawing that starts with a very easy way to draw a face for beginners. Learn the main techniques of how to add tone and shading to your drawing by creating a graded contrast between areas of light and dark.
In this art tutorial there are seven basic steps, you might find it useful to pause the video at each step. It is important to keep your drawing loose for as long as you can, always ready to change what you have as soon as you see a part of your drawing that could be improved, so it is a process of continuous drawing and questioning, questioning how the lines, shapes and tones work together. Fortunately Michelangelo has worked it all out for us!
This drawing took me an hour to complete and if you give yourself a similar amount of time I think you can learn a great deal from looking at how Michelangelo created his art.
The sculpture “David” is a masterpiece of Renaissance art created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. The statue of a man was commissioned for the roofline of Florence Cathedral, Italy, but at 17 feet tall and more than 6 tons in weight another place had to be found to display it in Florence.
On the 13th September 1501 Michelangelo began his carving. He was just 26 years old!
