In discussing the different types of tummy tucks, there are generally two categories of tummy tucks or abdominal plastic. There is a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. A full tummy tuck involves an incision that goes from one side of the lower abdomen to the other and it removes an area of skin and fatty tissue that goes to the level just above the belly button or the umbilicus.
So an entire paddle of skin and fatty tissue from the level just above the pubic hair line to the level just above the belly button is incised and removed. Once that entire area is removed the skin and fatty tissue on the remaining part of the upper part of the abdomen or the belly is lifted up and then pulled down towards the lower incision and sort of re-draped over the abdominal wall.
First of all, this gets rid of an enormous amount of excess skin and fatty tissue and it creates a smooth flat abdomen. The other type of tummy tuck is the mini tummy tuck and what that terms generally means is that the incision does not go above the level of the belly button. It stops at some point below the level of the belly button. Most patients are candidates for a full tummy tuck. It is relatively rare that a patient is a candidate for the mini tummy tuck. The mini tummy tuck just like anything else mini gives a mini result so there needs to be a mini problem.
If there is a small area of extra skin or a very small area of extra fat then that can be removed by means of a mini tummy tuck. But in general, most patients benefit most from a full tummy tuck or abdominal plastic, where a large area of skin and fat is removed, everything is lifted up the muscle is tightened and everything is pulled down and re-draped in a very flat smooth fashion.
