Know the warning signs of a high functioning alcoholic. How can anyone function well and be addicted to alcohol at the same time? This certainly sounds contradictory. Yet, this is exactly the definition of someone who is a high-functioning alcoholic (HFA). These people appear to have everything under control. They hold a steady job, dress well, and socialize without drawing attention to their drinking problem.
However, these outside perceptions hide the fact that they are actually struggling with an alcohol addiction. And there are some tell-tale signs of a functioning alcoholic – you just need to pay attention to his or her personality and behavior. Being in a relationship with, or being under the care of a HFA can exert serious psychological and emotional damage. In addition, the effects of alcohol on his or her body can be severe – from liver disease to memory loss, and even brain damage.
If you have someone in your life who exhibits these signs of a high functioning alcoholic, who is open to your concerns and is willing to seek help, they should also receive an assessment by a therapist or physician. You can also suggest finding a recovery program support group that offers meetings online and in person. You can even offer to accompany your loved one to these support groups to show your support and put them at ease.
